On graduating in humanities from the classical St. Thomas School in Leipzig, this patrician son is drafted into the compulsory German Labor Service of the Third Reich before being allowed to pursue his university studies. His studies are abruptly interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War which he survives on war duty with the Mountain Rangers. A rocky post-war period follows where the author starts out again as a dairy milker and lumberjack, and goes through an apprenticeship before being able to commence university studies in agronomy at the Technical University of Munich. Later he works as a research assistant at two renowned institutes in Freising. Emigration to Venezuela brings many changes again, as he works his way up from machetero on banana plantations to research assistant at the Agricultural Research Institute, before finally transferring to the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV), as professor of Analytical Chemistry at the School of Agronomy and a distinguished career in teaching and research.
